New Hampshire SPCA assists Bristol Police in animal rescue after second fire.

On Wednesday, December 13, 2017, the Field Services Division of the New Hampshire SPCA assisted the Bristol NH Police department acting on a search warrant at Tarawood Kennels, following a fire that consumed a cottage on the property.

The NHSPCA took nine German Shepherd dogs into protective custody after 29 dogs and puppies perished in the fire. This was the second fire on the property in a matter of weeks. In the first fire an additional seven dogs perished. The nine now in the custody of NHSPCA are four adults and five puppies. The NHSPCA also took in 3 rabbits and a hen in this case. The Bristol police have indicated that multiple charges are pending for the owner of the property.

A veterinarian has examined the remaining nine dogs and they will be held in protective custody until a court rules on their future. Court cases such as these can take weeks and months during which the NHSPCA will be caring for the dogs and other animals.

“We were incredibly saddened and frustrated by this case,” said Lisa Dennison, Executive Director of the New Hampshire SPCA. “Every time that we assist in a cruelty or neglect case, we are disheartened and often infuriated by the mistreatment of innocent animals. In this case, to witness the loss of 29 dogs due to the negligent behavior of their owner was devastating. Our staff also had the heartbreaking task of removing the dogs that perished in the fire and brought them to a local crematory so that their end would at least be one of respect and caring. We will care for the remaining animals and hope that the court will decide a brighter future for them allowing them to be adopted into new responsible homes.”

The owner of the dogs is Jennifer “Bobbi” Choate. Ms. Choate has been a backyard breeder either in NH or MA for a number of years. It is our understanding that Tarawood is not a licensed breeder in NH.
