Here at the New Hampshire SPCA, it will be a Very Mare-y Christmas indeed! Right now, our barn is full of beautiful mares looking for loving homes and we need your help! While we are committed to caring for our horses for as long as it takes to give them a fresh new start, winter is a really hard time to place horses. So, this week we are going to feature some of our gorgeous mares looking for homes, and we would appreciate any help getting the word out! Are you a horse lover? Know a horse lover? Are you part of any Facebook groups about horses? Please share their adoption bios and together we can give them the very best gift—a home.
A Very Mare-y Christmas
Freckles is a retired broodmare that has been in our care for over 4 years. That is an awfully long time for a horse to be homeless. We understand many folks may be of the mind that it may be better for her just to stay with us forever. As much as we love her, the reality is, for every horse that is placed in a forever home, a new space in our barn is made available for another horse in desperate need.
By adopting Freckles, you are helping save the life of the horse that will take her place!
She’s 31 years young, and very social and happy. She loves to gallop around her paddock a least once a day to stretch her legs! Make it a Very Mare-y Christmas and help make Laurel’s dream come true! Laurel Dream is a been there done that thoroughbred mare. Laurel is dreaming for a person to call her own. She loves to join up and is completely in your pocket. Laurel loves attention from adults and children alike. 22-year-old Laurel was formerly a hunter jumper in her younger days but has been out of work for many years. She has been evaluated under saddle during her stay with us and she is a very confident mare. She is best suited for an intermediate rider as she is a forward mover. Laurel has been diagnosed with Cushings Disease that is managed by medication. She will need a dry lot for turnout. Christmas morning and Frank Sinatra — name a better duo.
We believe we have the start of an even more iconic pair right here in our paddocks. We’re hoping our wonderful community can rally to help us find the perfect pasture mate to complete the new ‘best duo ever.’
You might be wondering how we can possibly say we know a better duo than Christmas and Frank Sinatra when we only know half of said duo. The simple answer? The half we know… She’s that good.
Plus, Frank would tell you that the very best way to have yourself a Mare-y Little Christmas… is to add a bit more Jazz.
Jazzie is a gorgeous 16.1-hand, 20-year-old Percheron mare who was reportedly an Amish plow horse before becoming a trail horse.
Thankfully, this big girl was rescued from her sad situation. However, it was soon determined that Jazzie developed cataracts which left her visually impaired.
Since being at the shelter, Jazzie has enjoyed her consistent routine and has responded well to our verbal communication. She has been thriving with the guidance of her pasture mate, Freckles, and loves that our new arena is a safe, consistent space to learn. It has even allowed us to start riding her once again. Jazzie is looking for a home where she can be turned out with another horse for companionship and a routine that can help her succeed.
Have a lonely horse that needs a friend? Like humans, horses need companionship, and no one should feel alone, especially around the holidays.
As herd animals, horses are happier and heathier living together. Ladybug makes fast friends with every horse she meets, even those with the most challenging of personalities. Though she can’t be ridden due to conformation issues, her true value is in her companionship. She’s an easy keeper, who loves to be groomed. She has a playful personality and is a pleasure to work around. She’s great for the farrier and loads well on and off the trailer.
